Lab The Rat are a fun-loving group of brothers & friends who, after seeing so many bands take themselves too seriously, came together to inject some cheerfulness and everyday civilian insight into the local music scene in Malaysia.

3 real brothers, a wife and two “assimilated sons”. Love, live, and have some fun! Don't take yourself too seriously, 'coz they don't. They play music to keep their bonds strong and cheer up their friends. That's all.

History

Band members Shahirah and Syarul met at the studio (Lab Rat Jam Studios, Section 13 Shah Alam) in 2004 where Syarul (and Kechik) were working at the time. We later bought over the studio to manage ourselves. Syarul, also frontman of another heavy rock band Love Me Butch, needed an outlet for his more light and carefree feel for music, and so banded together with two of his other brothers – Syaril and Syaiful, (his then fiancé) Shahirah, friend and long-time studio hand Kecik to form alternative-folkish-pop band Lab Rat.

Our first live show was a qualifying round for the Global Battle of the Bands (GBOB) Competition, which sent us to the national finals in Planet Hollywood (KL). Winning the nationals (and RM50,000 then), we were then sent to the UK to play at the London Scala Theatre for the World Finals. We did not win that final but has a good time nonetheless. The music that came from this union? Carefree and full of life, maybe, but we’ll just let you listen and enjoy for yourself now, won’t we?

Bandmate Nik Azwaa joined in early 2009, and we're having a load of fun and more to come!
